Evaluation Q.2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Callum: Hi, how did you come up with the brand for yourself and how did you promote it?
Jake: I first started off by coming up with the way that I wanted my name to be branded to that it is easily recognisable and everyone can recognise throughout without knowing my music. I used my brand on my products such as my digipak and digipak poster to promote as they are going to seen internationally and people would remember. A prime example of this is the Coca Cola style of writing because everyone worldwide knows this type of writing and if you were to take away the writing and use that font people are going to know the font without knowing the product that they provide. On music terms an example of the font that the writing is written that makes it recognisable is the AC-DC style font as it is all over t-shirts and people recognise it all over the world.

Callum: How effective do you feel the branding is of your Digipak and Digipak poster?
Jake: I felt that with my Digipak and Digipak poster I need to keep it simple as people don't like over complex designs and it would put them off the Digipaks. I also wanted to keep a link within the two of them to make sure that people remember mine over other Digipak products by my competitors. It feel that the brand that I made was effective because it meant  that people would remember the brand even if they don't know the music that I produce.

Callum: Is the brand shown through all three texts?
Jake: I feel that the music video did reflects and links in with the digipak that I made because the poses that I had done in the Digipak is the same as how I acted during the music video, which is one of living life the way you want and doing what you enjoy to do, which in case is to have fun. The digipak poster was different though because I felt that I need to catch peoples attention so I had myself looking more serious and making eye contact to draw people into my poster.  When it comes to the auxiliary tasks that I did I felt that I put a modern look on mine which in a way reflects the song because the song is written about modern day people so I need to keep my auxiliary tasks modern to link in with it.

Callum: In your digipak you had 5 out of 6 photos of you, this is rare from a solo artist why did you choose to have yours like it?
Jake: I feel that the different photos shows the different types of my personality that I have and in general all people have and I wanted to show those different personalities in my digipak. For example the back cover photo of the back of my head and shoulders is because I feel that sometimes do block the world out and can become quiet unsociable and that’s why have my back to the camera to show that I am being unsociable. Then you get though in the photo on the right side of the CD I am over expressing myself in the pose that I am doing and the type of personality behind this is one of random and over the top because I do get told sometimes I can go over the top and in the photo I am going over the top in the pose that I am doing.

Callum: Overall do you think that your brand is very successful?
Jake: I personally feel that the brand that I created for myself was a success. The reason being that I feel that I made it look professional while still getting my unique style across to the people who see the brand, I also that if people were to see the brand that I have created and they didn't know my music that It would catch their attention enough to look myself up and look at my music. From doing research into digipaks I found that people feel that you get more a view into the personality of the artist that has made it and with the digipak that I have made people are going to see what I am really like.

Callum: In the music video you are seen as a alcoholic and a smoker? Is that the brand of yourself you are trying to get across?
Jake: No, I personal don’t see the appeal of smoking and I only drink on special occasions so I don’t want my brand to be associated with that. Unfortunately this are problems in this day and age, if you were to walk through a park in London you are almost certainly going to see at least one person who is smoking or drunk. Then with my song I wanted to talk about modern day life and they are part of modern day life so I had to include them in the song. My aim though wasn’t to promote them through my brand to my fans and having them doing it because I was seen doing it in a music video that wasn’t the ambition of including them in the song.

Final Video

From doing this I have learnt that It is hard to make a music video and that It needs be well planned to make sure that you get the footage that you need to be able to edit it well so that the music video runs smoothly and follows well so you produce a good end project.

Digipak

From doing this have learnt that I need to get the balance right of the type of photos that I have in my digipak so they dont look predictable and each section is different from the rest while still having the stuff that It needs to have in it.

Photo Edits

From doing these I have learnt that with a photo I can make it look completely different by editing it and in some of my photos I am going to need to edit them so that they look different and still attract people into them

Ideas

I liked these two pieces of work and I wanted to base my cover of the digipak on them and my cover like them as they are unique and they stand out and I feel that they would make it look more like a blur cover that you would expect to see from them and that links with the song that we are re-making

Nelson Street Shoot

From doing this I have learnt that you need to mix up the type of photos in your digipak and doing this shoot it has given me a lot more options that I could use in my digipak which is what I want I don't want to be limited to a small amount of photos.

Park Shoot

From doing this I have learnt that to get the best pictures you need to go with your instictant and go for photos that you wouldn't normally because there is that chance that it may actually be the photo that you need to make your digipak stand out

Practise Filming Videos

These two scenes are going to have to be shoot again and the reason for that is that in the kettle one went he pours it you see us in the reflection of the the lid of the kettle which is what you don't want so we will have to do that again and make sure were not in it. Then with the other one of hi tying his shoe laces we had music on so his foot is moving and again that looks very unprofessional and will have to be done again.

Practise Filming Videos

We decided when filming that we would get the same action shoot from two different angles the reason for this is that we can show off our editing skills and merge them together to get a good shoot, it will also make it look more professional because you don't get a lot of long shoots in big artists music videos there are a lot of quick cutting scenes.

Practise Filming Videos

This section will have to be re-shhot the reason for this being that our actor wasn't able to do the tie so we then weren't able to get the shoot that we wanted from him so we need to make sure he can do it when it comes to re-shooting it otherwise we won't get the shoot that we want and need.

Practise Filming Videos

In these we felt that they were good because after we edit them and put them together they will make a good scene, what I did feel that we did wrong was that we only did one shot of each individual scene so if it comes to editing and we find out they aren't actually that good we are going to have to go back and re-shoot them so if we were to do it again I would have done around 4-5 takes of each one as the probability of one them being good enough to go in the music video is higher

Practise Filming Videos

From doing this piece of filming in particular we have learnt that we need to make sure that the camera is in focus when we are filming because in these individual pieces of filming they weren't in full focus and with that I feel that it made it look quite poor and if we were to do it again we would need to make sure that it was in focus and looked good.

Practise Filming Videos

For the lip syncing section of our video from doing this we have learnt that our actor needs to know the words of the songs and the parts when he needs to sing otherwise he is going to out of time and it will make it almost impossible to put the song over his singing. We have also learnt that he needs to look at the camera when he is singing otherwise he isn't going to be look confident and that will not draw people into our songs.

Practice Filming Videos

From doing this part of our filming we have learned that we need make sure that we do not appear in the reflection when we are filming which we struggled with and that we need to make sure that we still have the camera in the right position to get the shoot that we wanted to make it look as good as possible.
